background

Com.com

Com.com is a Hungerford Chamber of Commerce initiative to provide 6th formers with an easily accessible resource for further education and careers advice that is one step removed form the normal school and parental loop. Businesses who subscribe to com.com provide voluntary telephone and email advice, based on their own individual education, work and life experience. Because the scheme is predominately telephone and email based it will mean that there is no geographic restriction to the companies that can become involved and the aim is to build an extensive database of companies to provide as broad a range of experience as possible. Although the initial remit of scheme limits advice to telephone or email, it is envisaged that some companies may want to extend relationships with some students to encompass work experience and this will be up to the individuals involved to source relevant parental, school and legal permissions.

Restrictions and usage
Use of this list is limited to current John O'Gaunt Community Technology College 6th Form students (and also students who finished education in the last year) as a careers and education resource.

Currently a business advisor but also have an overseas wine company (in Australia). I have been in business for around 25 years, mostly running businesses I founded. My company was awarded “Investor in people” status (approximately 2004) as well as “6th fastest growing company in Southwest” (7 counties from Cornwall to Gloucestershire). Over the years I have employed many hundreds of people including a large number of young people. I also took on several French students over the years, as part of their BTEC or equivalent, usually for periods of 6-8 weeks at a time. I very much hope that many of these youngsters would feel that I have helped them to ‘grow’ as individuals which was always my aim.I love the idea of being able to help youngsters prepare for the ‘real world’ and feel that I have a wealth of experience. I’m a good listener, highly tolerant, and like to feel that I can relate to people of all ages and walks of life. In my commercial life I have started businesses, run sales teams large and small, created brands from concept to national retail success. I have pretty sound corporate and financial knowledge. As a business advisor I see my role to assist people to identify and achieve their goals (personal and business) and I would expect this approach to be highly relevant in mentoring young people.
